Iain was planning the week when Morag brought news: the crossing would be later than planned.

Ailsa worried that the island’s waste had to go straight away. Iain calmly explained the plan.
Iain: “We plan for the busy weeks, not only the quiet morning.”

Everything stayed stored safely, each kind kept apart behind the closed fence.

Morag brought the new crossing plan down to the landing.

Iain and Ailsa put up a clear notice, so visitors and neighbours knew the new plan.

There was no quick fix, just a careful plan, and everything ready for the next crossing.
Draft, 19 October 2026. The words and pictures are not yet reviewed by an educator. The story follows the outline in our story guide.
The real-life bit
On islands and in remote places, waste can wait in a safe store until it can be moved. At home, put your bins out when your council asks, and follow its own instructions. Gullbrae is made up. Your council’s own rules are the ones to follow.
