Privacy notice

BinDayBuddy has no accounts, no adverts and no tracking. This notice says exactly what information the site handles today, why, who helps us, and your rights.

Who we are

BinDayBuddy is run by Towpath Digital Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales, number 16913912. Registered office: Huntingdon Boathaven, The Avenue, Godmanchester, Huntingdon, PE29 2AF. We decide how this information is used. Contact us at privacy@towpath.digital or write to the registered office.

What we handle, and why

The postcode you type

Why
To find your council, and to ask your council’s own collection system for the bin days at that postcode
Who sees it
Your council’s system (or the company that runs it for the council) receives the postcode, with the property numbers of a few homes in it from the ONS UPRN Directory. It does not receive anything about you
Lawful basis
Legitimate interests: answering the question you asked
How long
We keep the council’s answer, filed under the postcode, for up to 12 hours so we don’t ask twice, then delete it. Postcodes are not written into our logs

Your house number or name, if your council needs it

Why
Some councils only give bin days for one home at a time, so we send your house number or name with your postcode to that council’s system. You type it into a form that sends it in the request itself, not in the page address, so it isn’t kept in your browser history
Lawful basis
Legitimate interests: answering the question you asked
How long
We keep the council’s answer, filed under the postcode and house number, for up to 12 hours, then delete it. We never write the house number into a log. It isn’t linked to your name, email or device

Your device’s internet address and the page it asked for, which can include a postcode in the address

Why
To deliver pages and protect the site from attack, through Cloudflare
Lawful basis
Legitimate interests: running a secure website
How long
Kept by Cloudflare under its own terms. We don’t keep request logs on our server. Cloudflare may also ask your browser to report a failed connection to it (Network Error Logging), so it can spot problems with the network; those reports go to Cloudflare, not to us

Your email and what you write, if you email us

Why
To reply and to fix what you tell us
Lawful basis
Legitimate interests: answering you
How long
Deleted once the matter is dealt with

Admin sign-in (our own team only)

Why
To let the team sign in with an emailed code
Lawful basis
Legitimate interests: keeping the admin secure
How long
For as long as the person is on the team

We don’t sell information, we don’t profile anyone, and we don’t use it for advertising.

Cookies

The public site sets no cookies. The admin area, used only by our team, sets cookies that are strictly necessary for signing in.

Children

The Family zone asks children for nothing and keeps nothing they choose: the game forgets every answer when the page closes. There are no accounts for children and no adverts.

Who helps us run the site

  • Cloudflare, Inc. (USA): delivers and protects the site.
  • Krystal Hosting Ltd (UK): the server the site runs on.
  • Your council: when you check a postcode, we ask your council’s own collection system (sometimes run for it by another company) for the bin days, as described above. The council is responsible for what its own system does with the question.
  • Supabase (data held in London): the database behind the admin.
  • Resend (USA): sends the admin sign-in emails.
  • Google Workspace: our email, where messages to privacy@towpath.digital arrive.

Where a supplier is based outside the UK, information can be handled there. We only use suppliers that commit to protecting it.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it, delete it, restrict how we use it or stop using it. Email privacy@towpath.digital. We reply within one month. If you’re unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office ↗.

Changes

Before accounts, reminders or class tasks open, this notice will be replaced with one that covers them, and we will check how they affect children first.
