Eddie stood at the gate and gave Hamish’s lunch a very grand introduction. Hamish just waited calmly in the grass.

Fiona held up one little sprig of grass. Hamish, she said, would probably like a much shorter menu.

Eddie showed Fiona three cards, one at a time. First the field is looked after, then the grass grows, and later a cow can graze.
For grown-ups: The three cards, in order: the field being looked after by a farmer with a tractor; the grass growing later; a cow grazing later still. There is no set waiting time between them, and the grass does not grow instantly.

Hamish lowered his nose to look at the tall, ready grass.

Hamish munched happily. His thought was just one word: grass.
For grown-ups: Hamish’s thought is one word: grass.

Eddie laughed and pointed at the field. The shortest menu was the right one, and Hamish had it already.

The real-life bit
A cow’s ordinary meal here is grass growing in the field. Getting a field ready to graze takes professional care and time, and there is no single waiting time that fits every field. Gullbrae is made up. Your council’s own rules are the ones to follow.
