Dougal pinned one grain card to a big wooden board. Beside it were three empty spaces, waiting for a place to go.
Dougal: “The grain has done one job. Let’s see which useful job comes next.”

Eddie held up the one grain card and waved at all three pictures. “Let’s send it to all of them!” Dougal gently held up a hand.
For grown-ups: Showing three options does not mean the same batch can go to all three. One batch can only be used once.

Fiona, Leena and Dougal each held a different picture. Feed for farm animals, algae for fish feed, and heat for the distillery.

Zara had a plan. She gave each batch its own card and put the cards in three separate rows, while Dougal held the board steady.

Now the board was clear. Each row had one batch and one place to go, and nothing was counted twice.
For grown-ups: Each row on the board is a different batch with its own destination: one goes to a feed store, one to an enclosed boiler for useful heat, and one to a sealed algae vessel for an ingredient. Every destination depends on professional checks.

Dougal pointed to one row. One batch, one chosen place. Eddie nodded. It made sense now.
For grown-ups: One allocation, one chosen destination in this illustrated plan. This is a teaching example, not measured amounts or a ranking of the best use.
Draft, 20 October 2026. The words and pictures are not yet reviewed by an educator. The story follows the outline in our story guide.
The real-life bit
Different suitable batches can go to different uses, such as animal feed, an ingredient for algae growing, or useful heat. Each batch can only go one way, and every use depends on professional checks. These are examples, not a claim that every route happens locally. Gullbrae is made up. Your council’s own rules are the ones to follow.
