Can you recycle crisp packets and plastic film?

Short answer

Sometimes. Crisp packets, bread bags, cling film and pouches are soft plastics. Some councils collect them at home already; elsewhere some supermarkets take them back. In England, every council will have to collect them from homes by 1 April 2030. Until then, it depends on your council.

Before the bin

Reuse bread bags and freezer bags, choose loose produce, and pick refill pouches you will actually refill. Less film coming in is the simplest win.

Check your council

Your result names the council that collects at your postcode and links to its own page. We don’t hold each council’s rules for this yet, so check that page before anything goes in a bin.

Where it goes next

Priya works at the sorting plant in Gullbrae. Her first question is always: what is it made of?

  1. 1. Collected separately or with recycling, depending on your council.
  2. 2. Sorted at a sorting plant. Priya checks what each piece is made of. Film behaves differently from bottles and tubs.
  3. 3. Baled and sent to a processor that can handle film, where one exists for that grade.
  4. 4. Made into new material. Not every piece becomes a new crisp packet. What it becomes depends on the plastic and the process.

Gullbrae is made up. This is a general example; your council’s route may differ.

Common questions

Can plastic bags go in the recycling bin?

Only if your council says so. Check above, or reuse the bag and look for a supermarket take-back point.

Are crisp packets recyclable?

They are soft plastic, often with a metal-looking layer. Whether they are collected depends on your council.

When will every council in England collect film?

By 1 April 2030. It was due in March 2027, but in July 2026 the government put it back. Some councils already collect film. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own rules.

Why the answer changes from place to place

Film tangles in some sorting machines, so councils only collect it where their sorting plant and buyers can handle it. In England, councils will have to collect plastic film and bags from homes by 1 April 2030. The date was 31 March 2027 until the government put it back in July 2026. Some councils already collect it.
