The story

Wee Bin, on the kitchen table, looks at a silver wrapper holding two pieces of orange peel. A closed tub of carrot sticks and apple slices sits to one side.

Wee Bin spotted a silver wrapper with two bits of orange peel inside. The carrots and apple slices were saved in a tub, for eating later.

Wee Bin points at the wrapper with his mitten while Buddy listens.

Peel can go in the caddy. But what about the wrapper?

Wee Bin: “Is that still good food, or is it really a scrap?”

Amina uses tongs to move the orange peel from the wrapper onto a white dish, with a tablet beside her. Wee Bin watches, his lid closed.

Amina checked the local instructions, then took the peel out of the wrapper.

For grown-ups: Take food out of its wrapping before it goes in the caddy. Check your council’s rules for the caddy.

At the bio plant, behind a closed fence, Amina shows Wee Bin the peel on one dish and the empty wrapper on a separate tray.

At the bio plant, Amina showed Wee Bin why: food scraps and packaging go different ways.

Amina: “The tiny workers do the breaking down. We look after the conditions.”

Back in the kitchen, Amina tips the two bits of peel into Wee Bin, with his lid open. The wrapper stays on its tray.

Back home, only the peel went into Wee Bin. The wrapper stayed out.

Amina checks a tablet while Buddy points at it. The saved food tub is put away, and Wee Bin sits closed on the table.

Buddy and Amina made it a habit: check the local guidance, every time.

The real-life bit

Take food out of its packaging before it goes in the food caddy, and save good food to eat first. Councils have their own rules for the caddy, including whether you can use a liner, so a grown-up can check yours. Gullbrae is made up. Your council’s own rules are the ones to follow.
